About This Kitchen

A West Chester kitchen that started life with a low drop ceiling, honey-stained cabinets, and a yellow vinyl floor — closed off from the dining room and dim even on a sunny day. We pulled the drop ceiling and the soffits to claim back the original full-height ceiling, took out a non-loadbearing wall to open the kitchen up to the dining room, widened the entry, and added a peninsula for real prep landing on the cook’s side and casual seating on the dining side.

Tribeca Shaker cabinetry in two tones — white perimeter uppers, navy lowers — with brass bar pulls. MSI Q Quartz in Calacatta Miraggio Gold runs across the perimeter and the peninsula; the warm gold veining is what ties the navy back to the LVP plank flooring underfoot. Stainless gas range, side-by-side refrigerator, undermount sink, brass-stem glass pendants over the peninsula.

The cabinets and footprint were a pull-and-replace. The wall removal, ceiling work, and doorway widening are what made it feel like a different house. Five weeks start to finish, $50–60K all-in.

What we tell our clients about this kind of project: pulling a drop ceiling and the soffits above the wall cabinets costs less than people expect and changes the room more than people expect. If you are staring at one in your own kitchen, it is worth asking about.
