What we know about Devon homes
Devon’s residential housing skews larger and older than the surrounding Main Line average. Three patterns repeat, and the same finish-level expectations drive both kitchen and bath scope:
Estate-tier traditional center-hall homes (1900s–1940s)
On larger lots, often with detached garages or carriage houses. Kitchens were back-of-house service spaces; almost every modern remodel opens them up to the breakfast room, butler’s pantry, or formal dining room — with inset custom cabinetry, marble or premium quartz counters (sometimes with waterfall edges), paneled Sub-Zero/Wolf/Miele appliance packages, custom range hoods, and service-upgrade work to replace the original 100-amp panel. Bathrooms tend to be larger primary suites (often 100+ sq ft) with frameless walk-in showers and tile to the ceiling, freestanding cast-iron or stone-resin tubs, double vanities with custom millwork, heated tile floors, recessed niches and hidden medicine cabinets, premium fixtures (Waterworks, Lefroy Brooks, Newport Brass, Brizo), and almost-always full second-floor replumb.
Mid-century traditionals (1950s–1970s)
On the smaller lots filling in between the older estates. More modest scope, similar finish-level expectations. Kitchens see wall-removal and cabinet replacement at high finish levels rather than basic refresh patterns. Bathrooms (60–90 sq ft) call for layout reconfiguration to support a real walk-in shower, full gut and replumb, and material spec at high levels — though typically with less custom millwork than the estate tier.
Post-2000 contemporary rebuilds
On tear-down lots, especially closer to Devon Horse Show grounds. Usually 10–15 years old when clients call us. Kitchens are refresh-tier or full custom rebuilds with contemporary design language; bathrooms run refresh-tier work — newer materials and fixtures over an already-modern shell.
What’s distinctive about Devon: clients tend to know their architect, their interior designer, and their landscape contractor by first name. We work into existing design relationships smoothly when they exist; we run our own design when clients prefer.
Recent Devon work:
- Kitchen (estate-home, down to studs) — $164,000 / 9 weeks. Custom inset cabinetry painted Hale Navy with a stained white oak island, marble waterfall island counters and full-height backsplash, paneled Sub-Zero/Wolf/Miele appliance package, custom range hood, butler’s pantry conversion from the original maid’s pantry off the dining room.
- Bathroom (estate primary) — $128,000 / 8 weeks. Freestanding cast-iron tub, 6-foot frameless-glass walk-in shower with marble tile to the ceiling, custom double vanity with marble top and integrated medicine cabinets concealed within paneled millwork, marble hex floor with radiant heat, Waterworks fixtures, full second-floor stack replumb.
Local suppliers and trade partners
Devon projects tend to spec higher than the regional median. Most materials run through Ferguson (King of Prussia) for premium plumbing fixtures (Hansgrohe, Brizo, Waterworks, Lefroy Brooks, Newport Brass, Rohl), Gerhard’s Appliances (Malvern) for paneled Sub-Zero, Wolf, Miele, and La Cornue specifications, and The Tile Shop and Avalon Flooring for marble, specialty mosaics, and high-end stone. We work with semi-custom and custom cabinet shops depending on the project — true custom cabinetry from a custom shop is common scope on Devon estates, with built-in vanities and millwork integrated into bath designs. AA to Z Plumbing is our partner on full replumb scope.
